Scope and Contents
The Scheffre collection consists of 21 court documents and correspondence between court justices and sheriffs in Baltimore, Maryland from 1770- 1786. The majority of the records are dated 1772. The writs are issued by the justices of the county court to the local sheriff, for the capture of charged persons. Charges range from failure to pay a debt, theft, assault and fornication. The accused persons include Andrew Shier, John Shitter, James Gaddis, Daniel Chamiens, James Sterrett, Ann Richardson, John Chilcoats, Sarah Bonds, David Brown, Mordecai Cole, Cordelea Cole, Abraham Cole, Henry Wilson, Joshua Byron, Stephen Seward Jr., Robert Caphole, Baruch Holtyinger, Jacob Cafoli, M. McCormick, and Abraham J. Edward. Also appearing in the collection are the names of the judicial officials, claimants, and petitioners, such as Alexander Lawson, William Young, Jacob Welsh, George G. Presbury, William Gibson, John Meale, John Robert Holliday, William Buchanan, Alexander Wells, Ignatius Whooler, George Harrison, Philip Thomas, Thomas Jenings, Andrew Buchanan, William Turner, and Samuel Worthington.
