The Roger Johnson account books are the business records, day book, invoice book, and ledger of Roger Johnson. The materials are related to Bloomsbury Mills the property of Johnson who was the youngest brother of Governor Thomas Johson. The materials are dated 1806 through 1842.

Biographical / Historical

Roger Johnson was born in 1749 as the youngest brother of Governor Thomas Johnson. He and his family moved from Anne Arundel County to Frederick County before the Revolutionary War and owned a considerable amount of land. With a partition of the Johnson holdings, Roger Johnson gained title to their lands in souther Frederick County, near Sugar Loaf Mountain and adjacent to Montgomery County, Maryland.

He operated the Bloomsbury Forge and Johnson Furnace in addition to the Bloomsbury Mills and several plantations. Roger Johnson died in 1831.

Scope and Contents

The Roger Johnson account books are comprised of materials from himself and his son and daughter in law, Richard and Juliana Johnson, respectively. The day book dated 1806 through 1812, documents quantities of wheat, rye, bran, and corn received at the mill in addition to flour, shorts, and middlings ground in Baltimore, Fredericktown, and Georgetown.

The collection's plantation accounts include many references to slave labor and the hiring of free Negro laborers and craftsmen. The invoice book dated 1809 through 1815, lists amounts of cloth and clothing brought. The ledger, 1812 through 1842, contains an alphabetical index including surnames and classifications such as provisions, plantation, wheat, tobacco, cash, and expenses.
