The collection consists of cards and invitations collected by the Shoemaker family of Baltimore. The Shoemaker family gained local and national notoriety as partners and owners in the Adams Express Company.

Biographical Note
The Shoemaker family came to prominence in Maryland as partners and owners of the Adams Express Co. At its peak the Adams Express Co. operated on a national level, shipping goods from coast to coast during the nineteenth century.
This collection consists mainly of calling cards and wedding invitations gathered by Augusta Eccleston Shoemaker (Mrs. S. M. Shoemaker).
