Biographical Note
Levin James Colston was born in 1848 in Church Creek, Maryland in Dorchester County to Annie W. Mace and Richard C. Colston. He had four surviving siblings, one of which, John M., owned a drug store in Church Creek. Colston captained the schooners "Carrie L." and "Charles Linthicum," which carried goods, such as lumber, bricks, and flour, to ports on the East Coast, including New York City, Norfolk, Virginia, and more. He worked primarily with Baltimore merchants.
Both schooners were built in Church Creek: the "Carrie L." in 1882 and the "Charles Linthicum ten" years later. Shipbuilding was a primary industry in Church Creek, because of its navigable position on the Little Choptank River and access to pine and white oak lumber from the forests surrounding the town.
Colston died in 1923 and is buried in the Old Trinity Church cemetery.

Scope and Contents
The Levin James Colston collection contains manifests, receipts, and correspondence related to Colston’s shipping business. The collection is primarily comprised of cargo manifests for goods shipped onboard Colston’s schooners. Many Baltimore merchants are represented in the documents, such as Kirwan Bros., Bland, Block & Co., and more, as Colston took their goods to ports along the East Coast. Many receipts for tug boat services are also included in the collection.
