Scope and Contents

Correspondence of various family members: WILLIAM JESSOP WARD, 1838-58; WILLIAM JESSOP, 1838-65; HENRY H. BARRY, 1859-60; CHARLES L. JESSOP, 1868; ABRAM J.JESSOP, 1878-86 and others concern land purchases and sales in Baltimore Co. MD, Clinton Co. Iowa and Scotland Co. MO; land taxes; rent collection and property management.

Letters of William Jessop, 1839 and William Jessop Ward, 1845 concern recovery of runaway slaves, and letter of I.N.Wilson to Edward Barnett, 1854 discusses freedom for Louise Johnson, a slave sold to the former by William Jessop. Legal papers, 1831-1918, include mortgages and property agreements; appointment of John Sloan of Williamsport, Lycoming Co., PA to recover three of William Jessop's slaves, 1839; agreement to arbitrate dispute between Mrs. Mary Jessop and Warren Manufacturing Co., 1868; estate papers of William & Mary Jessop including inventory and appraisement of their estates and two copies of William's last will land testament, 1866.

Financial papers include tax receipts from Baltimore City, Baltimore Co. and the state, 1831-61; Clinton Co., Iowa, 1858-72; and Scotland Co., MO, 1859-74. Also, insurance receipts and policies, 1849-56; financial statements, 1851-77 including bank statements, expense accounts of Mary Jessop, 1877, and a notebook of expenses for a trip to the West in 1858; receipts, 1840-1926 for rent, clothing, board, cemetery lots and tombstones, and stock in Lutherville Female Seminary.

Land papers, 1744-1904, include deeds of indenture, plats, surveys, lists of land warrants, agreements and title abstracts mostly for land in Baltimore Co., but also some in Clinton Co. Iowa and Scotland Co. MO. These papers of Charles Jessop, 1790-1819, William Jessop, 1828-66, and heirs of the latter from 1866-1904.
