Scope and Contents

In August 1940, 2nd. Lt. Clarence C. Head was ordered to report to Fort Holabird in Baltimore, Maryland for a one month refresher course, after which he was to report back to his proper station in Texas. His wife, Ruby Mae Head, kept a scrapbook detailing the trip, beginning on the day of their departure in San Antonio, until their arrival in Baltimore. She also documents several trips outside of Baltimore, including visits to Annapolis, Gettysburg, Arlington National Cemetery, Mount Vernon, and the New York World's Fair.

The scrapbook contains postcards, newspaper clippings, printed ephemera, and photographs taken by the Heads. Notably, Mrs. Head writes down her observations of Baltimore and lists, "Things We Never Knew Till Now About Baltimore," ranging from the price of milk to the shape of butter, to the layout of houses in the city. The scrapbook offers a unique snapshot of life in Baltimore (and the surrounding areas), in the summer of 1940 before America's entry into World War II.
