Biographical / Historical

The United States Bicentennial was celebrated in 1976, marking the 200th anniversary of the emergence of the United States as a nation.

In Maryland, the festivities included events and re-enactments at historic sites across the state, especially at sites related to the Revolutionary War.

In Annapolis, events centered around the Maryland State House, which served as the Capitol of the United States from November 26, 1783 until August 13, 1784. A commemorative plaque on the grounds reads: "In this State House. . . General George Washington resigned his commission before the Continental Congress December 23, 1783. Here, January 14, 1784, Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris to end the Revolutionary War, and, May 7, 1784, appointed Thomas Jefferson Minister Plenipotentiary. From here, September 14, 1786, the Annapolis Convention issued the call to the states that led to the Constitutional Convention".
