Scope and Contents
The Robert Gilmor manuscript collection consists of three boxes and three oversize folders of correspondence, journals, ephemera, etchings, photographs, and newspaper clippings related to Robert Gilmor I to Robert Gilmor VI.
The collection is broken down into 6 series. Items are arranged chronologically within each series.
Series I: Robert Gilmor I and Robert Gilmor II
This series consists of correspondence to Robert Gilmor I and II, and other addresses. Correspondents include Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte, Jerome Bonaparte, Charles II King of Great Britain, Charles Calvert, George I King of Great Britain, Francois I, Emperor of Germany, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Pinckney Jr., Lord Byron, Marquis de Lafayette, Duke of Wellington, Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, Charles Carroll of Carrollton, Winfield Scott, and others. There are also two volumes of travel journals kept by Robert Gilmor II during a trip to England in 1799-1800, and etchings of both Robert Gilmor I and II.
Series II: Robert Gilmor III
This series consists of Robert Gilmor III’s last will and testament, correspondence and a brief biographical sketch of Robert Gilmor III.
Series III: Robert Gilmor IV
This series consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, an etching, and other materials related to Robert Gilmor IV.
Series IV: Robert Gilmor V
This series consists of correspondence and an obituary for Robert Gilmor V.
Series V: Robert Gilmor VI
This series consists of correspondence and other materials related to Robert Gilmor VI and art work of the Gilmor family. There are also some photographs of paintings owned by Robert Gilmor II.
Series VI: Miscellaneous
This series consists of a genealogy of Thomas Airey’s family, newspaper clippings about the the Gilmors and the Glen Ellen, the Gilmor family home in Baltimore County, and other manuscript items. There are also two unidentified photographs, possibly Gilmor family members.
